How----My Country Tis

With the surrender of the British Forces led by Lord Cornwallis on October 19th 1781, the pangs of the birth of a nation would come to bear over the next few years.

A statement/question which became the focal point of the next six years was;

"It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example to decide the important question, whether societies of men are capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitution on accident and force."

As it was penned in the first of the Federalist Papers of 1787 by three gentlemen Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay who wrote the Essays to get the people of that time to a better understanding of the Constitution, this question of enormous import is as relevant today as it was then. In 1787, much like now, people were arguing the worth of the Constitution, some seeing it as a opening to a new monarchy others seeing it as a "useless waste of time" because it was not strong enough in what was being stated. The arguments going around at that time are almost the very same ones being proffered today. On one side is the dissolution of the rights given under the Bill of Rights, on the other is the steadfastness of the mainstream American. But yet, in the middle are the ones who do not know what is written in the Constitution but will argue for the sake of argument. These are the talking heads, they have no basis for their argument yet they argue.

In order for us to understand what is being slowly being stripped from us, it becomes necessary to revisit the Constitution and see first hand what gives us the right and privilege to call ourselves American. Then we will be called upon to again decide, can man rule himself or do we need an elitist government to tell us what and how.
